On January 6, 2022, the Center for Security, Strategy and Policy Research (CSSPR) hosted Co-Founder’ of the Stimson Center and ace U.S. nuclear scholar, Michael Krepon, for a webinar, to discuss his new book entitled ‘Winning and Losing the Nuclear Peace: The Rise, Demise, and Revival of Arms Control.’ The webinar was hosted by Director, CSSPR, Dr. Rabia Akhtar. While giving an overview of his book, Krepon looked back at how arms control was embraced and, later, harmed by both Washington and Moscow. He said nuclear powers, after discussing the conditions of nuclear peace, took steps to increase nuclear dangers, which, according to him, have increased over the years. Stressing how arms control is critical to strengthening deterrence, he said diplomacy should not be abandoned. Rather than focus on signing treaties or reducing numbers, Krepon argued that states must commit to strengthening norms. Krepon also suggested that 7 parties, to include India and Pakistan, must join heads and discuss ways to reduce nuclear risks. Watch the webinar here:
